Who has to undertake CPD?
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) must be undertaken by all Graduate, Provisional Associate, Provisional, Associate, Fellow and practicing Life Fellow members. The requirements are detailed in the API By-Laws.
What can and cannot be claimed?
With only one opportunity left for the year to gain CPD points it is timely that you check your records to ensure you have complied.
The following article addresses some issues that cause confusion among members.
READINGS
Section 2 of the API CPD Record refers to Planned Private Study. This is not simply for ad-hoc reading but designed to allocate CPD points to members who undertake study into a particular topic. NO POINTS are allowed for general reading of Journals, including the Australian Property Journal. In order to claim points for Planned Private study the member must list the topic they have researched as well as the publications read as part of that research.
IN HOUSE MEETINGS
General staff meetings are not CPD. It is questionable if any in-house meetings (other than those with set learning outcomes and presentation) meet the CPD requirements. To claim points for attending an in house meeting there MUST be a guest speaker. When claiming points for these activities the member must list the speaker, topic, date and CPD points for each meeting.
Formal training with external providers is calculated on a one point per hour basis.
IN HOUSE ARTICLES
Members who undertake research can claim CPD Points, however points are not applicable for articles where no research is involved. Articles written by a member on their area of expertise in not eligible for CPD points.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Some records submitted to the API seek to claim activities such as client lunches for CPD points. These activities will not be allowed unless there is some demonstrated educational benefit. The educational benefit will need to be detailed on the CPD Record.
Points cannot be claimed for attending or conducting auctions.
WHAT IS REQUIRED EACH YEAR?
Each member who has to undertake CPD for the full year must achieve 20 hours each calendar year. In every year, each member with a full year’s CPD requirement must achieve a minimum 10 property related points and 10 structured points. It is possible to achieve structure and property points at the same time (eg a Forum@Four or Property Conference is considered structured property points). If claiming points for Planned Private Study and/or On the Job Learning members are reminded that no more than 10 points can be claimed for of these activities.
If you require a Certificate of Compliance or have been included in the Annual CPD Audit then you MUST submit a CPD Record. If you do not fit into one of these categories then submitting a Record to detail your CPD activities is optional.
Members are reminded that as of 1 January 2011, "carry forward" points are no longer permitted. As a result, all Members commence the new year (0) CPD points.
